CBR - Constant Bit Rate

Constant Bit Rate (CBR) is one of the five service categories of the ATM Layer. This service type allows a user to define a specific cell delay, cell delay variation (CDV), and reserved a specific, constant fixed bandwidth on the network.

CBR services voice, video, and circuit emulation (e.g., T1 Circuit emulation). Voice and video that has been compressed may have a variable transmission rate and therefore would not fit into this service class.

CBR has the following specific attributes:

PCR and CDVT specified SCR, MBS, CDVT n/a MCR n/a Peak-to-Peak CDV specified MeanCTD unspecified MAX CTD specified CLR specified Feedback unspecified
Acronyms used in this definition:

CDV - Cell Delay Variation CDVT - Cell Delay Variation Tolerance CLR - Cell Loss Ratio CTD - Cell Transfer Delay MBS - Maximum Burst Size MCR - Minimum Cell Rate PCR - Peak Cell Rate SCR - Sustainable Cell Rate
