The technology that could bring Video on Demand, Video Telephones
and truly fast computer communication is ATM (Asynchronous
Transfer Mode). On Sunday April 9th Purdue University will have a
known leader in ATM technology giving a presentation. The speaker
is David Beering of Amoco and the title of the presentation is "ATM:
Practical Application or Practical Joke".
Mr. Beering is a leader in applying ATM technology to real life
applications. The project that he is working on for Amoco is called
ARIES. Mr. Beering's describes the ARIES project as the following
"The goal is to determine where ATM is needed in the Amoco
network, where technical flaws or gaps are lurking, and what
migration hurdles Amoco might face in deploying ATM". This
project involves 16 major vendors such as AT&T, Fore Systems, HP,
Cisco and Wiltel.
This project is more than just an internal Amoco project, Mr. Beering
says "But we were concerned that if Amoco was the only company that
learned anything then that would be pretty sad. We wanted everybody
to learn so that things move forward". There are people that are
taking notice of his work with this emerging technology. The ATM
Forum Enterprise Networking Roundtable says "Beering is the one
they are counting on to show the world that ATM is a viable
technology".
On December 8th 1994 Mr. Beering did a live demonstration of the
ARIES project for the United States Senate. The demonstration
involved linking two offices in the Chicago area, plus Houston , Tulsa
Okla. and Minneapolis using 45M and 155M bits/sec ATM services.
The demonstration involved ATM and a satellite link that was used
for downloading seismic images of the gulf's seabed - from Houston to
Capital Hill - and manipulating it to find signs of oil.
For his pioneering work with ATM Mr. Beering was chosen by
Network World as one of the 25 MOST POWERFUL PEOPLE in
NETWORKING. Mr. Beering's work with ARIES has been discussed
several times by Network World.

Mr. Beering has an article discussing his work with ATM in the April 1995
issue of Data Communications magazine.
