Actually, the NIC has hardwired default "MAC-address" 
(ESI, End System Identifier) ATM address is prefix 
(which switch normally gives trough ILMI) + ESI + selector byte 
(which is in many cases same as ELAN "number").

For example my Sun SS20 with Fore NIC has address 
39.246f.00.00011a.0000.ffff.0101.00400bd88021.01
<-------- prefix --------------> <----ESI---> selector
                                 00400b is Fore vendor code
                                 d88021 is serial number
