isochronous vs synchronous?

I have not been able to determine the distinction between synchronous
and isochronous data. I have read that NTSC video is an excellent
example isochronous data, since it consists of 29.97 frames per second.
But could this not with equal validity be called "synchronous data"?
Please help via post or email, or direct to FAQ.

Thanks,
Doug Nast
