Where ATM-25 is being used in a big way at the moment is for ADSL
(Asymmetrical Digital subscriber Line). These generally use ATM between the
"box in the home" and the exchange (central office), and usually offer
ATM-25 and/or Ethernet (10Base-T) on the home modem. It doesn't make sense
to use 155Mbps over Cat-5 in the home - it's overkill as you have a max of
about 8mbps in the downstream (to the home) direction and 1Mbps or so
upstream, so ATM-25 is the natural solution there.
ATM-25 is an option for Network PCs and Set-Top Boxes for the ADSL based
services, so it looks like it's a technology that's still alive.
