pgm or bmp to wavelet

I am a student and for my diploma thesis I would need a powerful wavelet
algorithm which can translate pgm or bmp images into wavelet and
backwards. Where could I find source code for such a converter? The
software should run on a SGI O2 Workstation under IRIX 6.3.
