hi,
   good question!

   Most of the terms in ATM do use the term "virtual" like (virtual
   channel, virtual path, etc. ) coz' of the obvious fact that they are 
   indeed virtual in the sense that they are imaginary channels on the actual
   physical link.


For example, take the case of a point to point PHSYICAL link between two
end stations:

The actual physical link between them is only **one** link as such but we
split it into multiple so called "channels" and "paths" for different data
transmissions, whereas in reality, all the data travel on the same physical 
link only - but the data is multiplexed / demultiplexed at the 
end stations and intermediate nodes using the Virtual path 
and Virtual Channel Identifiers.
