Hi, >A technology designed from the beginning to handle all types of >data is easier to modify, enhance, and maintain for new network >applications than is a technology (IP) that was designed to >slowly move ASCII text files from point A to point B. > But the situation now is not to compare ATM and IP. ATM in its own is a perfect tech, but chances never been given to ATM to deploy a worldwide ATM infrastructure. The demanding task, and its real world practice for ATM is to support upper layer IP service, then ATM shows its "disadvantage" over POS, which is a natrual extension to router model. What's more, IP is no longer IP years ago. Rooted is best-effort model, IP has shift to a multi-service platfrom. Many Cos/QoS ability has been added, or is adding to IP protocol suite. IETF Intserv, issl, rsvp, rap are on their busy works.
