Tim,
the difference is that an ATM switch is in essence a many-to-many device,
while an ATM access concentrator is in essernce a many-to-one device.
The difference may look subtle, and a many-to-many switch can act as
a concentrator (many-to-one) as you point out, but usually it costs more
than
a comparable concentrator for the job and is therefore less cost-effective.

Folks,
Can anyone tell me what ATM access concentrator is? My friend
tells me that he uses an ATM access concentrator to concentrate all the
traffic from a remote site to the aggregate STM-1, which is sent via SDH
network to the central ATM switch for outgoing traffic. What is the
difference between the ATM edge switch and ATM access concentrator? What
is the difference if ATM edge switch is put in the remote site instead
of ATM access concentrator for the broadband traffic (eg. video)
