Career Opportunities in Networking Research at Sandia National
Laboratories in Livermore, California

The Security and Networking Research Department at Sandia National
Laboratories/California is currently seeking exceptionally motivated
candidates for several openings in the computer networking research
area.

Who is Sandia?
--------------

Sandia National Laboratories is a multiprogram national laboratory
operated by Sandia Corporation, a Lockheed Martin Company, for the
U.S. Department of Energy. Sandia/California's mission of "providing
exceptional service to the national interest" includes national
security, energy, environment, manufacturing and
computing/communications research and development. Our facility is
located in Livermore, California, 40 miles east of San Francisco.

Networking Research
-------------------

Our activities involve research, prototyping, and evaluation of
innovative technologies and solutions for high-speed networks and
telecommunication services.

Some of our ongoing research projects include:

1. IPv6 over ATM (in conjunction with Ipsilon Networks).

2. Real-Time Network Controls for High Speed Packet Switched Networks
(in conjunction with the University of Minnesota).

3. Pricing Policies Applied to ATM Network Control Mechanisms (in
conjunction with Harvard University).

4. High-Speed Interconnect Technologies.

5. Intelligent Host Adapters with OS Bypass Capability (in conjunction
with Gigalab).

6. Simulation and Analysis of Wireless ATM Networks.

7. A Collaboratory Interoperability Framework (in conjunction with
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory,
and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory).

Many of these projects also include collaborations with other Sandia
departments such as the Scientific Computing, Visualization and
Combustion Research departments.

Our group consists of eight full-time researchers and several support
staff members. Recent Ph.D. hires have been from the University of
California at Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon University, University of
Minnesota, and the University of Southern California.

Sandia Resources
----------------

Researchers at Sandia have access to a wide range of state-of-the-art
computing and communications facilities.

Highlights of these facilities include:

1. IP Switching over ATM network testbed.

2. Digital video/audio coding transmission facilities.

3. A large, multi-vendor collection of ATM switches and related test
equipment.

4. Several supercomputers, including a teraflop massively parallel
supercomputer.

5. Production and experimental wide area networks, such as ESnet
(Energy Sciences Network) and NTON (National Transparent Optical
Network).

Qualifications
--------------

1. Ph.D. or equivalent experience, preferably in Computer Science or
Electrical Engineering, but other related areas will be considered.

2. United States citizenship is normally required.

3. In-depth knowledge and experience with computing and networking
methodologies and technologies.
