Many companies are entering this field. I do not follow the LAN,enterprise,
video server, video conferencing, set top box, etc. markets.Comments below
primarily apply to high quality applications.

Video, audio interface formats (component, composite, NTSC/PAL, etc.).Degree
of compression. IBP or I frame only. Treatment of VBI data. Conditional
access. Standards
based transport stream to ATM mapping?

Usually CBR. You may consider forward error correction. If not, how will the
decoder deal with lost cells?

Cost. Audio-video sync. Designed for continuous 24x7 use or intermittant
use? SW upgradeability. Remote management, diagnostics, statistics.

You might start with codec chip manufacturers. Two large ones are C-Cube and
IBM.
www.ccube.com
http://www.chips.ibm.com/products/mpeg/news.html

They should be very helpful with your product definition and design if you
may
buy their chips.

In the professional area, MPEG-2 /ATM terminal vendors include:

www.inovacom-mpeg2.com (transpeg)
www.ecitele.com (Hi-TV)
www.oki.co.jp (YS3110,YS3200)
www.lucent.com (MPEG-2 Digital Video System)
www.optivision.com (LiveSystem)
www.nortel.com (DV-MPEG series)
www.gdc.com (VIP series)
www.newbridge.com (36150)

Hope this helps for your application.
