Re: QoS Applications in ATM

Picturetel's Livelan 3.1 video conference implementation,
developed in conjunction with FORE implements this option
We recently announced a partnership with Intel to implement
native ATM support on their Teamstation System and their
Proshare Video System 500. Several other vendors,
have announced their intention
to support native ATM modes of working too

Why is it important ?

The application simply runs better over ATM, mainly because
the latency is very very low, whereas the latency on an all
ethernet implementation tends to be much much worse, simply
because of the variability of delay.

The other major use is for network based CTI - where voice
is transfered using AAL1 connections to produce low latency
above toll quality voice connections in the network

As Windows 98 and Windows 2000 (nee NT 5.0) are deployed with
native support for QoS we believe we will see much much more
use of the ATM QoS API

We at FORE have well over 100 partners now developing versions
of their applications that will take advantage of QoS as the
desk top OS's support this.
