The ATM Forum LANE/MPOA working group is just embarking on a project to use
MPOA concepts in a way that's scalable to large networks.  One of the
fundamental architectural principles is to limit the scope of shortcuts so
that they only travel to/from aggregation points, since that way you avoid
the huge scaling problem of having your local structure affected by changes
taking place very far away.  We've talked about what the scaling issues are,
but haven't tried (bothered) to quantify them.
