Positioning of ATM post Gigabit?

Where is ATM going in a post Gigabit Ethernet world? Most of the suppliers
to whom I have been speaking are pushing Frame solutions and talking down
ATM. As ATM was compromised in data terms in order to carry voice and video,
is it now hobbled if all the data goes to Packet over Sonet or similar
technology? Does voice over IP really work?
