I'm not sure I understand your point. What are the existing 
desktop applications that generate ATM cells? The existing 
applications mostly use IP, so carry IP over your favorite 
MAC layer. 

As for new services that use ATM natively, won't there be new 
applications? Today the killer app seems to be voice. I don't think 
it will fly over IP. Most of the xDSL modems are ATM on the network 
side. All you have to do is provide a tip/ring interface 
on the modem & provide support for UNI signaling in the modem. That not 
only bypasses existing applications, but also the PC platform.
