Subscriber identifing

Hi everybody
Lets assume I have few subscribers who should be connected to ATM cloud.
If I think well I can do it in the two ways:
1. Every subscriber has his own ATM interface and is directly connected
to the ATM switch. In this approach there is no problem with identifing
such users in MIB on the switch.
2. All subscribers are connected to some LAN hub/switch/router which has
only one ATM interface linked with ATM switch. And again if I am right
such subscribers are constrained only to using IP service by LANE or
IPoATM protocol. My main question is if there is some way to identifing
those IP users in the ATM switch MIB? Is there some solutions where one
VC is assigned with every IP subscriber (LANE and IPoATM allots one VC
for all LAN)? Some one told me that there is some solution where every
IP user is identifing by VCI/VPI numer. Would it be possible? In such
case the given VCI/VPI number (or set of number) would have to be
permanently assigned with one IP user.

The second question has to do with physical layer. What means e.g. STM-1
as description of ATM interface. Does it mean that transmission
hierarchy is 155Mb/s or that ATM uses SDH (SONET) on Physical-Medium
Layer?

I ask for any comments.

Thanks in advance, Rich.
