FWIW: the Q.2931 (and UNI/PNNI) standard defines an AAL parameters IE with
end-to-end significance, that the applications can use to signal the desired
AAL (as well as a whole host of other AAL related stuff) between themselves.
Also, transit switches can snoop this to activate things like PPD/LPD/EPD on
AAL5 services.
