You may want to haul out a copy of ISO/IEC 3309 (HDLC) and have a look
at section 4.5.2.  The protocol used by PPP (aka "POS") on SONET/SDH
is exactly HDLC framing.  (Yes, 4.5.2 is intended for start/stop
transmission, and PPP does use it oddly here, but it's still HDLC
framing.)
