Some disadvantages are the distribution and repetition of
functionality in the protocol stack. Distribution complicates the
configuration of protocol stacks for particular contexts (e.g.
enhancing security), and repetition can lead to inefficiency. More
details (& an alternative to layering) appear in the paper "Protocol
Organs: Modularity should reflect function, not timing." at
http://uluru.poly.edu/~tmoors/.
