Administrivia: we got spammed!

Someone at Columbia University seems to have set up a mailing list called
ows that itself included many popular mailing lists, including ion, iplpdn,
the main IETF list, the main ATM Forum list, and so on. The person then
subscribed this meta-list to yet another list in Germany, thus causing a
"Welcome to isads-distr@fokus.gmd.de" message to be sent out to everyone on
all of the lists on the ows list (you got that so far?). Then, naturally,
people started complaining to the ows list, which also got forwarded to
everyone ....

Anyway - you are NOT on the isads-distr@fokus.gmd.de or the
ows@ctr.columbia.com lists (at least not directly).

I (and perhaps others as well) sent a complaint to the Columbia postmaster,
and while I haven't heard back from the postmaster, the ows list seems to
have been shut down.

Hope that explains what happened ... unfortunately, it's pretty hard to
filter out this kind of thing without making the list completely moderated,
and I don't think we want to do THAT! I know I don't have the time to
approve each and every message ... anyway, this is the wrong list to be
discussing email spam prevention, so please don't reply to this message.

Thanks,
Andy
