IPv6 over NBMA - Montreal

This message is intended as a 'heads up' for the IPNG WG,
and an FYI for the ION WG. My apologies that it'll be
redundant for those of you tracking both groups closely.

I've updated my little web page of pointers to ION
I-Ds on the IPv6 over NBMA issue. It is at:

http://gump.bellcore.com:8000/~gja/iv6-drafts.html

This topic will be discussed in depth in the ION meeting
next Tuesday in Montreal. I'd encourage IONic people to read
up on IPv6 issues, and IPv6ers to come along to help
keep us packet-shredders honest.

For newcomers, a brief history:

	- July 1995, Stockholm, I voluntered to edit an I-D
on IPv6 over ATM. Soon afterwards, the IP-ATM WG was
formally tasked with working on the IPv6 over ATM
problem space, and I released draft-ietf-ipatm-ipv6nd-00.txt
	  to start public debate.

	- The public didn't really notice until Dec95/Jan96,
and much excitment was had at the March 96 IETF in LA,
as three proposals hit the newstands.
	  draft-ietf-ipatm-ipv6nd-01/02 tracked the evolving
consensus points and tossed out parts that were declared
	  crappy.

	- ROLC and IP-ATM merged into ION, which now has the task
of moving forward with IPv6. The default appears to
have been to expand the scope to be generally IPv6 over
NBMA. The I-D I've editted to track developments is
	  now draft-ietf-ion-ipv6nd-00. Three additional I-Ds
currently exist proposing some divergent approaches
to items on which there is no current consensus.
	  These are:
		  draft-ietf-ion-ipv6-nbma-00
		  draft-ietf-ion-ipv6atm-framework-00
		  draft-armitage-ion-tn-00

cheers,
gja
