It's interesting that your figures come out lower than my figures without
header compression.

	can you run ppp over fiber without sonet?

I suspect that theoretically you could.  After all, running HDLC over
copper works just fine without SONET, thank you.  ;-) However, you would
lose the APS services provided by the SONET ADM's, which some consider
useful.  You would also lose the standard interface to the telco fabric
which many transmission folks seem to think is a requirement.

Note that running ATM over fiber without SONET probably also can be made to
work but would require more kludgery to determine the start of the cell.
