i don't think that aal3/4 would have solved anything, since in the
ipsilon model (from which this discussion started) vcs themselves are
not expensive.  it is the scalability that is the issue and as you point
out, with aal3/4 frame discard would be difficult to implement.

atm works fine if you don't try to use it for what is has not been
designed for.  mp-to-p is one application where we need frame aware
devices.
