I was not trying to implicit critcism of the body of engineers who put
together SONET/SDH technology.

There are two separate but similar issues.  What level of restoration
is imposed by existing L2 equipment on MPLS when providing L2
emulation over MPLS.  What requirements does existing SONET equipment
impose on a lower optical layer (potentially an issue for GMPLS).
