Economic Justification for MPLS

Ladies and Gentlemen:

 

I have been doing some research looking for the economic justification for MPLS?  Does anyone have a paper, website, etc that explains why carriers would implement MPLS (other than technical)?  
I understand its technical merits, but I am really interested in its economic and/or other rationale for MPLS.
