Hi Faisal ! IP v6 flow label functionalities are applied by first opening the IP packet. It is experimental and includes many equivalent functions as IPv4 such as Fragment Offset, Identifier, flags and many other functions. MPLS label serves a logical number to be associate with a Forward Equivalence Class "FEC" i.e. a class where all packets to a destination are to be treated in the same way. The label is binded to a FEC over a link between Label Switch Routers. The coupling of links & associated label bindings over each link defines a LSP i.e. Label Switched path which is basically an and to end connection oriented virtual circuit operating at a layer 2¼ ! Once an IP packet is opened up and classified at the ingress of the MPLS network then this packet does not requires any further opening up in intermediary LSRs. The packet is therefore switched at what can be called a layer 2¼ !. The real layer 2 may change over the different links but what is switched is the labelled packet. I don't think its a good idea to try to find similarities between IPv6 Flow Label and an MPLS Label. It's like trying to find similarities between eating a meal and washing dishes ! Hope this helps !
