Title: RE: MPLS VPNs interconnection

Yes, I was talking about the area where there is the strongest push for L2
VPNs and that is the Ethernet-based Metropolitan Area Network (MAN).

An interesting MPLS-enabled L2 VPN design may use a hub and spoke model with
the hub also being a centrally located "exit point" (e.g. internet access).
Obviously this exit point will need services (like firewall, NAT, etc.)  I think
there is a lot of interesting work to be done in this arena as the ideas are
fully fleshed out.

Yes, I agree that customers want to simplify their remote sites.  But, by using a L2 VPN
they will get a flat network and that will give them different (and worse) headaches.
They will either have to have a router at the CE, or at the PE and at the PE it
can be managed for them.  True, this solution is not for all people, but unless you have
networking skills, it is (should be) the most economical.

karl,

Ok so you are saying that "true VR" :) will be able to interonnect L2 &
L3 VPNs at the SP side. The only problem is that routers make their
forwarding decision based on the L3 and above while TLS service may not
even have IP L3 in the frames it transports between customer sites via
SP.

Besides I find this interesting that you have a set of potential
customers who want to terminate TLS on a VR or any router in general -
usually those I talked to want to put low cost LAN switches in the
remote sites to simplify network design or cut costs.
