But Chris,

MPLS over GRE does not require MPLS aware core at all ...

The reason is different though :) Some poeple are just allergic to the
MPLS word anywhere in their network and since all MPLS provides is also
possible with IP (well maybe except TE yet) why not reinvent the wheel
and support some IP purists .... :). 

Anway L2TPv3 and MPLS will be used by operators and we vendors whatever
we think or feel will have to support both. End of story !
