Just an opinion, but I would tend to agree here. There are good books, 
great books, and the other kind. Almost any book will give the neophyte 
early student some grasp of the general parameters which can then be looked 
at in more detail by reading the RFC. RFCs by themselves, especially as the 
first read on a subject, can be pretty daunting. They are not thought of as 
teaching tools, whereas most books are. Given a choice, I would rather 
start with a book written to a purpose than a stack of RFCs.

The tricky part is figuring out what follows. What part of the standard has 
the given vendor included in the OS of any particular platform? And things 
get really exciting when you have to make these disparate platforms 
inter-operate, each with its "fully compliant" offering!
