Hi ,

I am just trying to spend some time in studying mpls vpn market. I want to list down all the vendors which support mpls . and then do a comparative analysis of the PE devices .

I am not sure if this information is available on net .

Any pointers to this is appreciable .

Regards
Akmal

Champion, your question is not quite right. The real question you need to
ask is "What Cisco IOS level supports the services I want?".

In a very general way you can say MPLS runs on every Cisco router from the
2600 up. But not all features supported on one platform are supported on
others. And a 2600 will not be a very good PE for the middle of New York
City, though by narrow definition it could do the job. There are other
deciding factors you need to think about as well: Memory, speed, number of
ports, type of supported ports....

Similarly, if the IOS for a given router supports the ISL protocol, then
you should be able to run VLANs through that router.

What you need to do is to get yourself a Cisco web site CCO login and spend
some time with the Feature Navigator (www.cisco.com/go/fn) that Dennis
Hartmann humorously mentioned on this mailing list a few weeks ago. Once
you find an IOS version that supports what you want, then see if that
version runs on the routers you are looking at. There is no simple answer,
no easy list.

Your other email asks how to do all this. That is a bit much to ask on the
forum since there is a lot to it, and all the information is available on
the Cisco web site. It is not a simple 3-step program. Go to the Cisco site
and do a search on the router platform you have plus the words "MPLS",
"ISL", and "VLAN". You should very quickly find information on how to set
up the system, along with sample configurations.

You also need to understand what you are doing, how MPLS works and what it
is. I have said it on this forum before and again I would recommend
Pepelnjak's book MPLS and VPN Architectures if you want to get one book
that will explain the whole thing, in case you don't already know. The book
is published by Cisco Press, ISBN 1-58705-002-1.

I hope this helps, and good luck

Roger Williams
