hello, throughput of what? for the time being, we can leave aside the book rik suggested, mainly as most problems as solved by simply "clear problem definations".... (no disrespect meant..i agree its a good book) another grey area can also be "average"... ;-) last night no one used my network so u used 100Meg....and zero for the rest :-D so u have 2Mb average...nah doesnt work.....i think at least. Throughput = average number of bits/time (if u dont mind using L2 overheads) throughput also = average number of bits after stripping L2 header/time from IP point of view throughput= average ip bits/time (packets is bad if u dont have same packet size..bits look better) from tcp point of view throughput =average tcp bits/time and so on.......... what do most people/customers define as througput? i think its *WIRE* capacity.....the concept of a SDH circuits/Lease lines defines most of it...traditionally. ..my basemark is normally the comparision to sending data over to the other guy compared to hauling a leased link. for example.. if i used SDH muxes...do i consider the TUG/VC overheads..no i wont it comes in somewhere in the network, but i "dont care" about what u do in the middle as long as i get my DS0 across at 64kbps... througput out of network = [data i pumped in end2end across ur network ]/time i give u space for L2 protocols (sheesh u use up so much for SLIP :-( per frame...but ok i need SLIP across and ADH equipment too....] most customers wud look at baselines against pulling point to point links for MPLS network througputs... (unless u like to sell L3VPN only for the outsourced routing benefits...but then PPVPN guys may have a problem...specially if i have VoMPLS etc coming in) -JS ----- Original Message ----- From: Muzammil Ahmad Khan To: john smith Cc: mpls-ops@mplsrc.com Sent: Tuesday, March 18, 2003 6:57 PM Subject: Urgent Help Needed... Hello, I am working on the quantitative analysis of MPLS VPN. In this analysis i want to have a comparision of a network having a VPN network with another network having MPLS network. In this analysis i want to have the comparision of these two networks with respect to THROUGHPUT. Now, the probelm is that i want to make sure that whether i am using the correct formula for the calculation of the throughput or not. I am using the formula Throughput = Average number of packets received / Time Please confirm me that whether this formula is correct or not. Waiting for urgent reply.
