Hi, a practical example of high memory usage is the oregon IX route server (Cisco 7206 with 1 GB RAM), which holds a BGP process operating with 500 MB of RAM (sh proc mem). That would also allow 1M IP prefixes considering 500 Bytes for each one (reasonable). Of course, with these numbers stability of your network is a must. As already pointed out by others RAM is not the only thing to look for in a productive environment. CPU, RAM usage, I/O bandwidth, routing protocol specific timers and so on are to be balanced to get an overall satisfactory package. kind regards Martin > Hi, > > cisco documented that its routers are capable of having up to 1 million IP > > entries in their forwarding tables.
