hi Alex, Layer 2 VPN broadly refers to operation of VPN on layer 2 only. I will consider a simple example to make the understanding clear: Lets say the toplogy is something like this: Customer Site 1 ----------------- VPN (Layer 2) ---------------- Customer Site 2 Now, when an ISP says to the customer that he/she(ISP) shall provide him/her (customer) Layer 2 VPN then it means that the customer site 1 can send layer 2 pkts (ethernet frames) to customer site2 using this Layer 2 VPN. Basically, no IP thing is involved here and with no routes at all (at the customer edges), the two sites shall be able to reach each other. No ROUTING is happening in Layer 2 VPN (not digressing from the main topic, but yeah! bridge learning does happen in Layer 2 VPN). Customer Site 1 ----------------- VPN (Layer 3) ---------------- Customer Site 2 Whereas when we talk about Layer3 VPN, routing shall transport pkts from site1 to site2. I hope I have brought the meaning clear :-)).. also this is my understanding any difference in opinions are more than welcome :)) Thanks & Regards Tarun B _________________________________________________ Tarun Bhalla Wipro Technologies 26 Hosur Main Road, Bommanahalli, Bangalore- 560 068.
