Sylvia, it is my understanding that the VC MErge labeling is used on ATM and perhaps Frame Relay platforms. The goal of using VC Merge is to be able to reuse the same label for a different FEC. By example, if three lines of traffic were arriving at an ATM box, normally you would have to have 3 separate labels in order to interleave the frames and keep track of them. However, if you buffer the traffic long enough such that the group from Source 1 is finished, you can then use the same label to represent the group from Source 2, then again for the group from Source 3. The key is the ability to buffer. The drawback you can see right away - potential delays which leads to higher jitter. The benefit is that more FECs can be dealt with within a given label group.

I hope this is helpful

Roger Williams

Hello Friends,

1. can someone please tell me exactly when merge labels are used?
2. If one uses 2 labels , outer and inner, can one call the outer label as the "merge label"?
