Thanks Roger,

Actually I generally wanted to ask this to the list,

#1. Can I  assume that a merge label is a way to send packets to the same destination (PE) using the same label which arrives from various sources at a point in the network?

#2. Is there any way i can setup an LSP using merged labels as in example 1, and then, use the path as a reverse path for traffic emmiting from a source?

More like...if traffic emits from a source A in the network, various PEs(say Y1, Y2, Y3), who want to receive traffic from the source A in the network, try and setup an LSP to PE of A.

These PEs would in turn contact the P devices (say X1, X2, X3) and at a point where multiple PEs end up contacting the same P device, the P sets up 1 LSP to the source A's PE device.
this LSP which has been setup by X1, X2, X3 are used to send traffic emiting from A to P routers X1, X2 and X3.
these devices X1, X2, X3 keep a map which says that if traffic comes them over that LSP, it should be sent to the PE devices over Y1, Y2 and Y3 (more like a 1 to many cross switch).

Would the "merge" label kind of idea help in such scenarios? As you can see, it is still a "merged" Label, and no buffering is needed either.

Sylvia, it is my understanding that the VC MErge labeling is used on ATM and perhaps Frame Relay platforms. The goal of using VC Merge is to be able to reuse the same label for a different FEC. By example, if three lines of traffic were arriving at an ATM box, normally you would have to have 3 separate labels in order to interleave the frames and keep track of them. However, if you buffer the traffic long enough such that the group from Source 1 is finished, you can then use the same label to represent the group from Source 2, then again for the group from Source 3. The key is the ability to buffer. The drawback you can see right away - potential delays which leads to higher jitter. The benefit is that more FECs can be dealt with within a given label group.

I hope this is helpful

Hello Friends,

1. can someone please tell me exactly when merge labels are used?
2. If one uses 2 labels , outer and inner, can one call the outer label as the "merge label"?
