I believe it is possible now with a few limitations, and frankly speaking except for a couple of caveats (stated below) there's not much to it in terms of configurations,
* You need to define an explicit-route for your LSP which traverses multiple OSPF areas,
* Autoroute and Forwarding Adjacency feature in some IOS versions is still a question mark to my knowledge
* Hops outside the area where LSP originates need to be defined as 'Loose'
* Tunnel re-optimization and Affinity Info is another unknown to me across areas
* FRR Node protection also has some limitations which to my knowledge are being worked on.

It is possible. I guess Cisco is working on it. But I'm not sure how?
