to be more accurate, i said augmented pnni, which is not the same as
i-pnni. augmented pnni would replace nhrp in the r2r case, since in most
cases the routers either belong to the same ospf backbone area or they
are runing bgp, in which case manual configuration is needed anyway.

for hosts, nhrp would be used as a replacement of cip.
