Steve has made many constructive contributions in this and related
forums. My favorite, made at the Naval Research Lab. symposium on
multicast addressing and ATM (3/95) popped up during the open Q&A
session at the end. Steve occupied a seat on the board at the time,
when the discussion migrated to how MARS could possibly manage
multiple, (on the order of 1,000's of) overlapping IPmc groups and
still support the mp-to-mp (real-time) connectivity required by
distributed simulation hosts.
Paraphrasing, Steve said:
ATM is just packet shredding with overheard. If you need
[mp-to-mp] connectivity, why not just use IP? its sufficient to do
the job, and there's already a protocol defined *and field
tested*. Besides, there's an entire Internet worth of "rooters"
out there to support it.
