The paper that started it all is:

    %A W.E. Leland
    %A M.S. Taqqu
    %A W. Willinger
    %A D.V. Wilson
%T On the Self-Similar Nature of Ethernet Traffic
    %J Proc. ACM SIGCOMM '93
    %C San Francisco
    %D September 1993
    %P 183-193

An updated version appeared in IEEE/ACM Trans. on Networking (and just
won IEEE's highest award for a research paper). It is on-line as
ftp.bellcore.com:/pub/dvw/sigcomm93.ps.Z -- the TON version is
ftp.bellcore.com:/pub/dvw/tome.ps.Z

At SIGCOMM '94, Mark Garrett and others showed that MPEG is self-similar
(ftp.bellcore.com:/pub/dvw/sigcomm94mwg.ps)

There have been several more papers (generally in ACM SIGCOMM proceedings)
show WAN traffic is self-similar and beginning to explore reasons why traffic
might be self-similar.
