grooming means traffic consolidation which could be:

  - separation of traffic streams according to the service type into a
single compact traffic stream that can be efficiently handled. (ex.
grooming several STM-1s carrying mixed traffic you can obtain one STM-1
carrying only voice and an other one carrying only data);

  - concentration of small traffic streams into a single one (ex. you have
several STM-1 carrying only a small percent of traffic; with grooming you
concentrate these small streams into a single STM-1).

this is my opinion only and may not be correct.
