The answer is very simple:

- ATM transmits cells of 53 bytes, and when a switch detects a wrong cell,
the cell is discarded, thrown away, finito. ATM does not retransmit cells.
- It's the function of the upper layers (for instance TCPIP) who is
responsible for the control of packets. In that case when the upper layer
detects a wrong packet, the receiver asks at the transmitter to resend the
whole packet, not only the cell that is missing because the upper layer
protocol does not know anything about the cells.
