Good luck with your instant education ... better hope the boss/client
isn't reading this too :-)

1. encapsulation: RFC1483
2. more encap, plus address resolution within a subnet: RFC1577 and 1755
3. alternate means of carrying IP over ATM (pretend ATM has an
Ethernet MAC): LAN Emulation (atm forum spec)
4. beginning subnet-to-subnet communications: NHRP internet draft
   future directions:
5. Multiprotocol over ATM (MPOA) atm forum work in progress. I don't
think specs aren't available to non-members, but searching the
web for MPOA turns up lots of tutorials & papers. [Anyone know if
there
   are public draft specs available?]
6. Ipsilon's IP switching approach (http://www.ipsilon.com/index.htm) -
these guys started all the excitement about IP cut-thru in ATM
6a Data Communications mag-sponsored debate between Ipsilon and
Newbridge on MPOA vs IP Switching - a fun read
7. Label switching (ftp://ftpeng.cisco.com/mpls/mpls) - IETF WG - more
in the IP switching direction, as approached by the IETF
8. Anthony Alles's (cisco) paper on internetworking with ATM is a
nice overview on all this, except it was written in '95, before
the IP Switching/Mpls stuff got going.
