Just a note...Not all "telephony" works as you describe. In fact, most
carrier transport networks are engineered so that if an error condition is
detected (a degraded or failed span) then traffic is rerouted through a
protection path. If I leased an ATM pipe from LA to NY and a connection
failed somewhere in Kansas, I'd be very upset if I had to detect and repair
it. I hope PVCs work better than that!
