TM 4.0 section 5.10.6 allows switches to transmit RM cells out of sequence with respect to data cells. Thus, to minimize the transit path length and enhance feedback, a switch may elect to forward RM cells as quickly as possible, bypassing any associated data cells that may be queued. What problems may this technique create? It is quite obvious that the Nrm parameter seen by downstream agents will appear modified, even potentially violating the min and max of 2 and 256 respectively. However, Nrm applies to source behavior, as specified in 5.10.4, and is not defined for switch behavior. Would destinations (particularly SARs) have a problem handling RM cells with a very low Nrm (1 or 2)? Any comments or opinions would be appreciated.
