I am working on a project and I would like to put together a network map from my pc to a site in vancouver, canada. I did a "tracert" and I got the following: ----------------------------- C:\WINDOWS>tracert www.ubc.ca Tracing route to www.ubc.ca [137.82.194.43] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 149 ms 135 ms 123 ms tnt2.durham.nc.da.uu.net [206.115.154.197] 2 1096 ms 1098 ms 1084 ms 207.76.34.209 3 740 ms 677 ms 701 ms Fddi12-0-0.GW1.RDU1.Alter.Net [137.39.40.227] 4 1113 ms 711 ms 739 ms 132.ATM9-0-0.HR1.DCA1.Alter.Net [137.39.30.45] 5 702 ms 744 ms 812 ms 102.ATM2-0.XR2.DCA1.ALTER.NET [146.188.160.250] 6 791 ms 761 ms 690 ms 194.ATM3-0.TR2.DCA1.ALTER.NET [146.188.161.150] 7 802 ms 832 ms 764 ms 101.ATM6-0.TR2.SEA1.ALTER.NET [146.188.136.234] 8 811 ms 840 ms 846 ms 198.ATM6-0.XR2.SEA1.ALTER.NET [146.188.200.113] 9 758 ms 683 ms 633 ms 194.ATM11-0-0.GW1.SEA1.ALTER.NET [146.188.200.45] 10 800 ms 808 ms 715 ms BB1.VAN1.UUNET.CA.ALTER.NET [137.39.250.74] 11 694 ms 726 ms 850 ms h12-1-0.starcom.bb1.van1.uunet.ca [205.150.222.18] 12 865 ms 835 ms 790 ms bcnet-van-oc3-atm510.3.starcom.net [209.153.195.58] 13 767 ms 890 ms 799 ms gigapop-vlan2.hc.BC.net [207.23.240.235] 14 818 ms 791 ms 893 ms CF-HCrtr.atm.BC.net [207.23.240.6] 15 902 ms 765 ms 797 ms UBCrtr.atm.BC.net [207.23.240.66] 16 909 ms * 985 ms anguhub14-142.net.ubc.ca [142.103.207.1] 17 * 737 ms 777 ms cscihub1.net.ubc.ca [137.82.202.2] 18 899 ms 978 ms 995 ms www.ubc.ca [137.82.194.43] Trace complete. C:\WINDOWS> -------------------------------------------- How do I find the subnet masks at these sites. For example, I see network 146.188 (class B) but I am not sure how to interpret the last two bytes into subnet and host id field. Also, I noticed that hop number 3's network (137.39) and hop 10's network (137.39) are the same. If they are the same, why did hop 3 did not route it to hop 10 directly rather than going through the network (146.188) ? Any help would be appreciated. You can post here or e-mail me at "virs@earthlink.net". No flames please .... Thanks, virs |
