LUNI2.0 provides the services of multicasting by introducing the concept
of Selective multicast servers (SMS). Each SMS represents one or more
multicast groups ( i.e. multicast mac addresses ). Every LE Client that
wishes to be able to receive the multicast traffic registers with a Lan
Emulation Server the multicast mac address in one of its registration
requests. This registration prompts a SMS to add the LEC as a party to
its outgoing P2MP connection ( Multicast Forward VCC ). All those LECs
who wish to send data to this multicast group resolve the multicast mac
address by issuing LE_ARP to the Lan Emulation Server. Once resolved,
the clients establish a p2p multicast send VCC to a SMS. The data sent
on Multicast Send VCC gets forwarded to all LECs who have registered as
listeners in the multicast group through Multicast Forward VCC. This way
the multicast traffic is segregated from broadcast traffic.
In the event of SMS being not present, the only way to distribute
multicast traffic is to have it broadcasted through BUS and let the end
systems decide what to do with the data packet received.
