You might want to read the documents for ILMI 4.0 and PNNI 1.0 available in
the approved-specs folder at http://www.atmforum.com to get the full story.
In a nutshell, ILMI is management function, PNNI is a routing function. ILMI
tells a switch of an end user what its ATM prefix is, for example, or tells
an end user where the ATM name server is. ILMI is also used to manage nodes.
Just examples. Whereas PNNI does for ATM networks exactly what RIP or OSPF do
for IP networks. A newer protocol, AINI, is the exterior gateway protocol
(EGP) for ATM.
