You might want to read the documents for ILMI 4.0 and PNNI 1.0 available in the approved-specs folder at http://www.atmforum.com to get the full story. In a nutshell, ILMI is management function, PNNI is a routing function. ILMI tells a switch of an end user what its ATM prefix is, for example, or tells an end user where the ATM name server is. ILMI is also used to manage nodes. Just examples. Whereas PNNI does for ATM networks exactly what RIP or OSPF do for IP networks. A newer protocol, AINI, is the exterior gateway protocol (EGP) for ATM. -- Bert manfredi@arl.bna.boeing.com -----------== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==---------- http://www.dejanews.com/ Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your Own
