Hi all, I'm quite new to this newsgroup, so forgive me for any errors or omissions. But, my two cents worth: >From the view of a service provider, Sonet and DWDM are competing technologies. Do you build a network on a fault-tolerant, proven (yet limited in data rates) technology [i.e. Sonet] or do you go for something which will offer you more capacity for your fiber and rides the trend to move all communications to packet-based technology (i.e. DWDM). Sonet when coupled with ATM appeals because of its stability and widely agreed upon standards, but lately we have seen DWDM fighting back tooth and nail. Whereas before IP over Sonet or even DWDM was only a best-effort service, the introduction of protocols like MPLS which offers higher quality of service will make deploying DWDM as a high capacity backbone technology more and more attractive as a technology. Data traffic is fast taking over voice traffic, no doubt. The isochronous nature of Sonet is fast making carriers switch to technologies which offer higher bandwidth like DWDM. When talking about switches which cannot handle the high capacity of DWDM, Albert was right in saying that there aren't enough devices but companies like Juniper, Foundry and Cisco are churning out terabit routers to meet this demand.
