Another option is to use cell training. That is, all the cells of
a packet may be transmitted consecutively on the link.
(imitating a packet with some extra overhead, but that is ATM).
All cells of a packet are collected at an intermediate node and
the transmission at the outgoing link starts after all the
cells of the packet are received. Of course, minor optimizations
are possible.
This does not allow interleaving cells from different end points
of the mpt-to-mpt connection, however it may not be such a big
issue considering the nature of the problem.
The more difficult problem is to have bandwidth reservation on
a mpt-to-mot tree. Every time a new end station joins, the current
tree may no longer be feasible, requiring a new tree
to be established. If mpt-to-mpt is used for best effort, then
this problem does not exist.
