You're quite correct.  The MID is preserved through an ATM switch
wheras both the VPI and VCI may change.  In SMDS/CBDS the VCC
terminate at connectionless servers which don't re-assemble the AAL3/4
packet, but do look inside for addressing inforamtion, alter MID
values and modify the Cell checksum appropriately and then send the
cells out on some other VCC modifying the VPI and VCI appropriately.
